Naaman and Elisha – 2 Kings 5

This week we get a bonus podcast episode! Yours truly neglected to look at the Sunday School schedule last week and recorded the wrong lesson on Naaman and Elisha.  Oops!

Elijah and the Prophets of Baal – 1 Kings 18

Joshua Ulm and I recorded a podcast this week before we head out to Camp Wartburg tomorrow on the Confirmation Retreat!  I’m really looking forward to the weekend, but please do keep us in our prayers.
On this week’s episode we discuss the real meanings of Elijah’s taunts, the number three showing up more than you might think, and the blessings of looking through Bible texts more than once (after we had attempted to record but didn’t realize we weren’t actually recording until 30 minutes later)

Jesus and Zacchaeus – Luke 19v1-10

This week’s lesson is Jesus and Zacchaeus from Luke 19:1-10

Jesus Appears on the Emmaus Road – Luke 24

Sorry all – the podcast has been recorded for a couple days, but editing and publishing took me a while this week.

Hopefully it’s not too late for your preparations!
This week’s lesson is Jesus Appears on the Emmaus Road from Luke 24

The Empty Tomb – John 20

Back at it again!  It’s a little sparse this week, but hopefully still beneficial for all.  I prepared for the Empty Tomb lesson from John 20.

Jesus Calms a Storm – Mark 4

Sorry for the delay in getting this to you this week. Here are the links for this week on Jesus Calms a Storm.

Jesus Calls Matthew – Mark 2

Sorry for the longer-than-anticipated break from the podcasts. Here are the links for this week on Jesus Calls Matthew.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth – Luke 4

In the study this week, I made reference to Jesus using a scroll and talked briefly about how we got our Bibles today.  To dig deeper with this, Lutheran Hour Ministries made a fantastic video series called How We Got the Bible.

Jesus Calls the Disciples – Matthew 4

In the study this week, I made reference to the shields of the apostles and a map from the Lutheran Study Bible.

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman – John 4

This week’s lesson is on Jesus and the Samaritan Woman. Somehow I worked in a reference to Harry Potter for this lesson – can you guess how and why?

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus – John 3

The special guest this week is Rev. Dr. James Gimbel, president of Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton, Canada, (whom I affectionately call “Dad”) and features a bit of some father-son banter, so check it out!

Jesus Clears the Temple – John 2

Here are the links to the podcast for this week on Jesus Clears the Temple. There is another song at the end of this episode too, so be sure to check it out!

Jesus Changes Water into Wine – John 2

I’m a little late getting the podcast ready for this week, but I am planning to continue it this spring!  Here’s this week’s episode with a bonus song at the end that ties into the podcast:

Christmas Special

Our “Special Guest” this session is once again the dramatized ESV version of Luke 2.  Listen in for some fun facts and trivia about the real story of Christmas!
One good source of Christian artwork that I go to often is from the Art in the Christian Tradition website at the Vanderbilt Divinity Library.  Here’s a link to the search results for Luke 2 this week.

Advent Special

This is a brief look at some of the suggested Biblical prophecies and fulfillment as well as some other general Advent themes.
If you would like to dig deeper this week, please see the “Prophecies of the Coming Messiah” excerpt from the Lutheran Study Bible.
As I mentioned on the podcast, Handel’s Messiah is another excellent source of prophecies and fulfillment.  I’ve had a great time digging deeper into the Bible passages in the Messiah and the music too.  The best version of the Messiah that I have found is on Youtube here and is good to enjoy year round!

David Becomes King – 1 Samuel 16 and 2 Samuel 5

To dig deeper on church and state / government and leader issues, check out these links:
Luther’s catechism on the Table of Duties (scroll down a bit to see the Bible passages on the duties of government and of citizens)
Lutheran Hour Ministries’ video-based Bible study called “We The People: Citizens of Two Kingdoms

David and Jonathan – 1 Samuel 18 and 20

This week’s special guest is Danielle Mizel, in addition to our dramatized audio Bible.
Among the topics discussed on the podcast was the nature of the relationship between Jonathan and David. Some have suggested that they were in a homosexual relationship, but that is not how the Bible truly paints it.  For a more in-depth commentary on this particular topic, the LCMS has provided a document called “God’s Gift of Sexuality – Frequently Asked Questions.”  Find the reference to David and Jonathan on pages 8 and 9.

Reformation Special

This week’s special commentary comes from the Lutheran Hour Ministries’ Men’s Network Bible studies, called “A Man Named Martin.”  The series has two parts, and you can watch the videos here: Part 1 Part 2  I highly recommend this series to you and anyone else looking to dig deeper into Martin Luther and the Reformation.

David and Goliath – 1 Samuel 17

The lesson is David and Goliath and the Bible text is 1 Samuel 17. Our special guest for this episode is Holy Cross member and trained DCE Mike Kahler, so we thank him for his time and insights. Stay tuned for a special Reformation episode next week!

Saul Becomes King – 1 Samuel 8-11

The lesson this week is Saul Becomes King and the Bible text is 1 Samuel 8-11.
